This is one of a series of plein-air paintings from Battersea Park in the summer of 2024. They mark a turning point for Maddy’s development and confidence in painting landscapes with slightly more abstraction. A real celebration of paint, ‘Leaning Tree’ is full of texture and highly pigmented colours, treading a line between realist and abstract. 
 
The blues of the trees in the distance, the gesture of the trunk, and the colours throughout the sky are Maddy's favourite moments in this painting.
 
Maddy says: "I see it more and more in my landscape paintings as time as gone on - the movement of colour moments across a painting, everything is tied together, I'm no longer painting literally, but with more feeling and atmosphere."
It is also memorable as a painting when Polly - a small dog belonging to her mother  - walked across the palette, leaving a line of small oily footprints across the tarmac under the tree she was painting beneath.
