Painted 'en plein air' in Battersea Park, London. This is real celebration of paint. It is full of texture and highly pigmented colours. Treading the line between realist and abstract, its composition is inspired by some of the larger works of John Piper (flowers that burst out of the canvas like fireworks) and the colour palette by the Provençal landscapes of Cezanne.
Maddy says: "This is one of the turning point paintings for me. It marks the moment my brushstrokes started to change as I advanced from trying to paint the literal views in front of me, to a more impressionistic handwriting. I see it more and more in my landscape paintings as time as gone on - the movement of colour moments across a painting, everything is tied together, I'm no longer painting literally, but with more feeling and atmosphere. See for example, The Pond by the Pump House Gallery, painted in Battersea Park two years later."
