14” x 12”

Oil on Belgian linen panel.

This painting is unframed. Maddy painted it while demonstrating to her oil painting class at London Fine Art Studios the possibilities of a simple colour palette, known as the Zorn palette. It consists of only two 'colours', plus white and black pigments, as follows:

- Ivory Black

- Yellow Ochre

- Cadmium Red

- Titanium white

The painting is wonderfully loose and full of different textures, including the literal texture of the linen panel - which likely had another painting underneath it once upon a time.

Look all over the artwork for the variety of edge quality - hard edges on the left of the metal jug, the right of the egg, and around the top of the onion and garlic. In contrast, there are lost edges on the left of the egg cup, through the transparent glass, and in the shadow cast by the onion.

Maddy's favourite moments are the reflection of the egg in the metal, and the little highlights showing the shine of the ceramic white egg cup.

One of Maddy's students remarked: 'It's even more beautiful in real life'.
