Oil on Belgian linen panel, 8” x 12”.

This painting is unframed.

By the way, this is one of the artists' favourites.

Maddy says: "There's so much fun stuff going on within a simple composition of 'just an aubergine'. You can still see a beautiful thin dark grey-blue wash on the Belgian linen canvas. This was the first layer of paint underneath the juicy purple and warm sunny cerulean blue of the foreground that suggests the tablecloth. Look for the bright moments of colour within the highlight on the aubergine too, tying the other colours of the painting together with the purple. Also spot the rich dark reflected colour towards the bottom of the aubergine, giving it more form and 3-dimensionality. The purple comes in again towards the bottom, suggesting the edge of a table and improving the composition of the painting.

I painted this while teaching a still life oil painting class at London Fine Art Studios. Here students learn everything to do translating a three-dimensional object 'in life' into a two dimensional one that exists in paint. Talking about the components of a painting and things to look out for when enjoying or analysing artworks is one of my favourite things. If you ever have questions about my paintings, for example 'why is X there' or 'what is that brushstroke', I'd be delighted to talk around it all!"
